Why Uganda? For that matter, Why Adoption?
Those are questions Nick and I have already heard a few times....
Why Adoption?
We've always been satisfied with having one biological child. Having another has never been something either of us has really had a desire for and still don't. However, adding to our family has something we've considered for several years now. When Teagen was about a year old, my closest friends might remember hearing me say, "If we could give Teagen a brother his same age today, we would". We spent some time researching international adoption not long after we moved to Georgia. At the time, I suppose there wasn't enough. There wasn't enough money; there wasn't enough faith. We just couldn't see a way to make it happen and we eventually just stopped looking. We didn't mention it again (out loud or to each other at least) for years.
A week or less maybe after we hosted the boys from the Orphan's Choir, I remember sitting across from Nick at a high top at Quizno's (we lead fabulous lives, I know....control your envy). It seems as though we looked at each other and just knew....We knew our family would never be the same. We knew we would be adding to our family through adoption. We knew there was no going back. I feel incredibly blessed that I haven't had a need to "convince" my husband to get on board with our international adoption. We've been in unison all along and it feels great.
In the end, we feel called to adoption (specifically international) and we have the space and means to do so.
Why Uganda?
Nick's easy response is "Why not Uganda?" I love it!
I, however, somehow find a way to make things more complex than they usually need to be - just ask the hubs :) Neither of us can deny the way our hearts were touched by a certain Charles, Ben, and Allan (and Harriet, too) when we were lucky enough to welcome them into our lives for a brief time as the Uganda Orphan's Choir was ending their East Coast Tour. During the weeks following, it seemed that Uganda found it's way into my mind nearly every day. Whether it was in a book I was reading (multiple times in Decision Points by George W. Bush), the news, or random other things I heard or saw during that time...Uganda was showing her face repeatedly. Nick already felt drawn to Africa so here we are!
